As you can see, with the exception of the Delta Amex Blue Card, all other Delta cards have elevated welcome bonuses. The sign-up bonuses range from 70,000 bonus miles with the personal Delta Amex Gold Card, up to the 100,000 bonus miles with the business Delta Amex Reserve Card. Keeping in mind that each card differs in its annual fee, earning structure, and associated card benefits. For instance, the personal Delta Amex Gold Card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year (then $99) and comes with a relatively limited set of benefits including free first checked bag, priority boarding, 20% in-flight saving, and no foreign transaction fees.

On the other hand, the personal Delta Amex Reserve Card offers additional benefits including a round-trip Companion Certificate every year upon card renewal (up to domestic First Class), complimentary access to Delta Sky Club, The Centurion Lounge, and Escape Lounge, Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) waiver, upgrade priority, access to complimentary upgrades, among others. But the Reserve card comes with a hefty annual fee of $550 per year.

Welcome bonus eligibility

Be sure to compare the cards to ensure that not only the welcome bonus but also the earning structure, card benefits, and associated annual fee all make sense to you before applying. Keep in mind that the welcome bonus for most American Express cards is not available if you have or have had the same card in the past. You will see the following language on the application page:

Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this or previous versions of this Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.

– American Express card application page

American Express has a mechanism built in that will warn you if you are not eligible for a welcome offer. If a sign-up bonus is not available to you, the following message will appear in a pop-up window:

Based on your history with credit card balance transfers, American Express welcome offers, introductory APR offers, or the number of Cards you have opened and closed, you are not eligible to receive the welcome offer.

We have not yet performed a credit check. Would you still like to proceed?

Note: Your application will be considered withdrawn if no action is taken on this page.

If you receive this message, you have the option to either continue with the application or cancel the application.

Check for potential targeted or personalized offers

In addition to considering the publicly available offers, don’t forget to check for potential offers you may have using the following methods:

1. Custom offer page for Delta SkyMiles American Express Card

Head over to the Delta SkyMiles Amex page: https://www.deltaamexcard.com/ and put in your SkyMiles number and your last name. If you are targeted, you should see those offers after clicking the “View My Offer” button that are associated with your Delta SkyMiles account.

If you are not targeted, you would see the following message:

PLEASE VERIFY THAT THE INFORMATION YOU ENTERED IS CORRECT AND TRY AGAIN.

– Delta SkyMiles Amex page

If you do not have a Delta SkyMiles account yet, you can create one here: https://www.delta.com/join-skymiles/.

2. Personalized offers when booking a flight on delta.com or via the Fly Delta app

This method can potentially produce a different offer than what is publicly available. To try this, simply search for and select a flight on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app. After selecting a flight, a personalized offer should appear on the booking page.

Compared to the offers above that come with only miles for the welcome bonus, this method can produce an offer that has both miles and a statement credit for the sign-up bonus. The statement credit is usually issued after making a Delta purchase in the first 6 months of opening the card.

Interestingly, the offers can also differ between on the Delta website and in the Delta app:

This particular welcome offer is for the personal Delta Amex Gold Card that was found on a delta.com booking page. As you can see below, you can earn 50,000 bonus miles plus a $300 statement credit. The bonus miles will be issued after spending $2,000 on the card in the first 6 months, whereas the statement credit will be issued after making a Delta purchase in the first 6 months.

Another offer shows up by going through the similar booking process in the Fly Delta app. As you can see below, the 50,000 bonus miles remain the same but the statement credit component is $200.

It is interesting that these two offers shown above are for the same card with the same spending requirement and the same annual fee structure ($0 the first year then $99 thereafter), but the welcome offers differ, in this case by $100. Therefore, be sure to compare the offers that are available to you, including publicly available and targeted ones, to make sure you are applying for the best offer. This is especially the case since you can typically only earn the welcome bonus for a given American Express card once as discussed above.

3. Email or mail offers

Occasionally, you may get a targeted offer either through your email (for example, if you sign up to receive emails from Delta) or in the mail. This can be another way to lock in a great welcome bonus.

The Takeaway

Personal and business Delta Amex Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cards are now offering elevated welcome bonuses, up to 100,000 bonus miles. Take advantage of this offer before it expires on 03/29/23!
